Field notes on journeys into expansive spaces

Arc’teryx Tokyo Creation Centre

High above Tokyo’s Aobadai district, the Arc’teryx Tokyo Creation Centre stands as a masterclass in how space can reflect brand philosophy, blending technical innovation with quiet reverence for the natural world.

Designed by TORAFU Architects, the three-storey building is built around the concept of “Outside In,” creating fluid transitions between interior and exterior, work and contemplation.

On the ground floor, garment workshops sit beneath cypress-slat ceilings and open into a courtyard that evokes alpine terrain. The second level operates as a collaborative studio, large cutting tables, ambient light and sculptural references to the Himalayas all bring the brand’s mountain DNA indoors.

The basement transforms into a gallery-like zone for events and workshops, with materials displayed like curated installations. The rooftop completes the journey: a circular bench crafted from Yanasesugi, a rare Japanese cedar, connects local craftsmanship with the outdoor ethos of the Canadian brand.

More than a workplace, it’s a space for experimentation, inspiration, and deep alignment between design and environment. Retail as it should be, refined, reflective and rooted.
